Soccer has been a major part of Matthew’s life at a very young age. His father Garvin Gourie was in the Military, so Matthew has had the opportunity to play on soccer teams all over the United States. He has played in Maryland, Hawaii, Georgia, and South Carolina. Garvin retired from the Army at Ft. Benning in 2002, and made Georgia their home. Matthew played his last four years of club soccer here with Redstar. During the four years Matthew also competed for Harris County High School and was the first soccer player to receive an athletic scholarship at his high school. He was also part of the 1986 Georgia Olympic Development Program (ODP) Team.
Matthew was scouted by Francis Marion University while competing with Redstar to play Division 2 Soccer in Florence, South Carolina. During the Spring of Matthew’s junior year with the Patriots he was one of two student-athletes from Francis Marion to attend the NCAA Leadership Institute in Atlanta, Ga. With his last semester of college approaching, Matthew reflected on the growth and opportunities that had taken place because of soccer and wanted other kids to have those same opportunities. He decided to get into coaching. While still at FMU Matthew took a trip to Columbia, South Carolina to take the necessary classes to become a licensed soccer coach. Since then, Matthew has coached both high school and club soccer.
After graduating from FMU in four years Matthew return to Georgia with a Bachelor degree in Business Management. Shortly after returning home he was hired at TSYS as a Business analyst. Matthew decided to continue his education and enrolled in the Master of Business Administration at Troy University, and completed the program during his first two years with TSYS. Matthew has been with the company for three years and does not think he could have picked a better company to start his career with. When Matthew is not at TSYS or on the soccer fields he is usually spending time with his girlfriend.
